We've watched the cost of tuition rise and student debt increase. Now is not the time to slash the federal grants that help make college affordable.
One study found that a maximum Pell Grant award covers almost 30 percent of the cost of college this year. But if that maximum is frozen, it would cover just 20 percent for students in 2025/26. Worse, the recently passed budget resolution by Republicans in Congress would open the program up for additional cuts, putting a college education out of reach for many working families.
This is not how you rebuild America's middle class. The only way to protect American workers is to make sure they can access the education and training needed to compete in the new economy.
We, the undersigned, oppose any measure that would reduce federal financial aid and make college harder to afford.
